Dear Safety Conscious Warcraft Gamer,
I’m going to bet that you or someone you know has been hacked. I’ll even bet that the person hacked never even knew how they got hacked in the first place!
With all the new dirty tricks hackers are coming up with now days it is hard to stay one step ahead. The security of your account has probably already been compromised.
TIME IS MONEY – I’ll wager you’ve spent a LOT of time on your Warcraft account.
The trouble is that most people trust Blizzard to keep their account secure. Worse yet people think that by adding a WoW authenticator to their account it will remain secure.
The majority of Warcraft gamers have no idea the true extent that hackers will go to to hack their account.
If you are truly serious about keeping your account safe, please read on.
My name is Amanda. I have been playing MMORPGs for 12 years now and I have NEVER had my account hacked.
Being in the computer security industry myself I was amazed at the problems people were having keeping their Warcraft accounts secure.
When my guild got hit with 4 hacks in one week I decided it was time to start doing some research.
What I found amazed me!
All kinds of people are getting hacked. People in the US and other countries, people with authenticators, and even people with high security e-mail accounts.
After the first week of the major hit our guild took from hackers I started to talk with those people who had gotten their accounts hacked.
None of them reported that they had gotten all of their stolen items back. Two cases in particular never even got their accounts back.
My conclusion was that you cannot survive a hack, you must stop hackers before they get you.
I started think about the time and money people invest into World of Warcraft, how aggravated the victims of hacks were, and how this all could be prevented.
The WoW authenticator was not that answer.
How could people have fun playing World of Warcraft if they knew that eventually their account would be hacked and they would lose all of their hard earned gold/gear?
I started to do research day in and day out about how hackers were actually hacking accounts.
Many times I came up with dead ends. The fruit of my labor actually came when I started talking to the people who had been hacked.
I had a list of questions to ask each person who had been hacked. These questions narrowed down where and when that hack took place.
The ways in which hackers were getting at peoples accounts is becoming more and more sophisticated.
And it doesn’t stop there!
I found that most of the time hackers could easily be prevented with just a little bit of knowledge on what hackers newest sachems were.
I started to compile a list of what exactly hackers were doing to trick people into downloading their malicious keyloggers and viruses.
Whole guilds were actually infecting themselves with the malicious software which would eventually mean a downfall. The worst part was that they did not even know it was happening.
The people I talked to about it (even if they had not gotten hacked yet) would say “Wow, I have done that before.” or “I never knew doing that could get you hacked!”.
